Integrated HealthPeter believed that health and well-being are more achievable when approached from multiple angles. He experienced the benefits of mindfulness, food as medicine, and many other modalities directly. In honor of Peter’s passion for holistic and integrated health, distinct major gifts were initially made to this area, and we continue to value its integration across our focus areas. |
Disaster + Crisis ResponseWe allocate a portion of our annual budget to disaster response so that we can be a timely funding partner during the hardest times of crisis, while our annual grantmaking allows us to continue addressing longer-term impacts in support of recovery. • Provide support for natural and humanitarian disasters such as hurricanes and floods in our geographic areas of focus. • Provide support for disasters related to the Alfond family’s heritage. |
Maine
In Maine, our work focuses on Youth Thriving. Our localized theory of change addresses core community needs by focusing on positive childhood experiences for middle and high school students. Additionally, in 2013, Peter established a Healthy Living program at MaineGeneral Hospital to enhance the overall well-being of Central Maine residents, which continues today as a legacy initiative.
Youth Thriving
Empowering happy, healthy youth to thrive, learn, and lead in a vibrant, supportive community.
Theory of Change: The PAF will support community-based youth development organizations that help young people thrive through positive childhood experiences that foster mattering and belonging for all middle and high school-aged youth in Maine.
Puerto Rico
In Puerto Rico, we focus on two main areas: Food and Nutrition Security and Youth Thriving. As we developed our localized theories of change, we focused on Food and Nutrition Security to ensure fresh, locally grown, nutrient-dense food is both available and accessible to meet essential community needs. For us, Youth Thriving includes support for children and families, including health & wellness, academic success, and social-emotional skills.
Youth Thriving
Amplify conditions for young people to thrive, mind, body, and soul
Theory of Change: The PAF can support children in Puerto Rico through 2-generation school models, social-emotional programming, academic enrichment, and building instructional capacity. This will help improve their academic outcomes and access to post-secondary opportunities.
Food and Nutrition Security
Accessible, affordable, local food produced sustainably and free of pesticides
Theory of Change: The PAF can improve sustainable access to nutrient-dense foods in Puerto Rico by investing in sustainable farming, food security, and sovereignty.
